About us

TU Darmstadt stands for excellent and relevant science. We are playing a decisive role in shaping far-reaching processes of global change—from energy transition to artificial intelligence—through outstanding scientific knowledge and innovative academic programmes. We group our cutting-edge research into three fields: Energy and Environment, Information and Intelligence, Matter and Materials. We are a university with strong ties to the Frankfurt Rhine-Main metropolitan region and a very strong international focus. We are committed to European values and European integration.

About our department

We are a dynamic, innovative team in search of nanoporous materials, manufacturing methods and transport processes that deliver benefits in the areas of water, sensor technology and energy conversion. Within the research group "Transieves" we intend to develop nanoporous materials and separation layers with new transport properties for separation applications. In order to implement transient nanopores experimentally, we investigate mesoporous, conductive ITO layers and their transport behavior under application of potential frequencies.
We offer to embed you into an inspiring, collaborative team what uses the latest technologies in a highly interdisciplinary work environment which offers a wide range of opportunities for professional development.

More information about our research is available on our website:

Your tasks
Your tasks include:
  • Preparation of mesoporous conductive, asymmetric ITO layers and their functionalization with redox-responsive silanes or polymers for the experimental implementation of transient porous layers.
  • Characterization of the produced materials with regard to structure, functionalization, conductivity and transport properties. Derivation of structure-property relationships.
  • The establishment of a setup for the realization and monitoring of transient mesoporous layers, e.g. by combining fluorescence microscopy, permeation and electrochemistry.
  • Estimation of the potential and limits of transient mesoporous layers for the separation of molecules.
  • Close exchange with cooperation partners and coordination of cooperation, especially within the FOR Transieves.
  • Preparation of scientific reports and publications for the above-mentioned process, as well as representation of the project at conferences and seminars
  • Support with the application and assessment of the follow-up application for the above-mentioned procedure.
  • In addition, the tasks listed above promote your own scientific qualification (doctorate).

You will actively contribute to the teaching of the department by participating in lectures, practical courses, seminars and examinations. You will assist in the supervision and assessment of student research projects, Bachelor's and Master's theses.

You will be entrusted with the organizational tasks of day-to-day laboratory work, such as cleaning and maintaining the equipment used (fluorescence microscope, nanofiltration system, potentiostats) and cleaning the laboratory areas used.
Your profile

You have:

  • A very good University science degree (M.Sc./Diploma) in chemistry or a related subject
  • Very good knowledge in the field of transient pores, FRAP and fluorescence microscopy, electrochemistry, especially impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry, sol-gel chemistry and functionalization of mesoporous materials, to transport processes in nanopores
  • Knowledge in the use of dyes or photochemical reactions or polymerizations as well as knowledge in fluid imbibition are advantageous.
  • Interest in the further development and the opening up of new fields of application of technologies such as transient pores

Furthermore you have:

  • The ability to work in a team, outstanding skills in interdisciplinary work, a very high degree of independence, very good knowledge of English and the willingness to present your work in an international environment and submit research  proposals are desired.
  • We expect you to coordinate your own sub-project while including all other team members.
We offer

Technical University of Darmstadt offers varied and challenging assignments, freedom to work independently, the latest technologies, good collaboration between colleagues in partnership, needs-based training opportunities and customised personnel development.

Opportunity for further qualification (doctoral dissertation) is given. The fulfillment of the duties likewise enables the scientific qualifications of the candidate.

  • Development and organisation – comprehensive in-house training offers, including the opportunity for continuing education and development;
